Passage 1

Since the earliest times, trees have always been very useful and important to man who made use of them in many ways. Even today trees continue to serve man in so many ways.

Trees provide man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats and even bridges. Furniture such as tables, chairs and beds is made of wood.

In the tropics where it is very hot throughout the year, trees protect man from the terrible heat. They are also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains which are so common in the tropics.

If there were no trees or vegetation of some kind to hold back the soil with their roots, heavy rain would wash away the rich surface soil that is so important and necessary to agriculture. The result is that the land becomes a desert.

There are so many desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas must have been very rich fertile areas, but since our ancestors in the distant past did not have enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down all the trees in the areas where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by, the rich surface soil was blown away and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the land was turned into useless deserts where nothing could grow.

C. the rich top soil couldn’t be held back

D. the balance of nature is unimportant to man

Passage 2

Among the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films in recent years have been based on science fiction stories.

It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but it can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.

Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H.Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages. Modern science fiction writers don’t write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind or in imagining future world which results the world we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones.

In an age where science fact frequently overtakes science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who see the future clearly can teach us how to master new technology and live in a rapidly changing world.

A. the last few hundred years B. the last one hundred years

C. the last two hundred years D. the last three hundred years
